Rotational disturbances.
Disturbances to the planets orbital rotation may be one explanation for ancient descriptions of a sun that once rose in the west and set in the east.
Herodotus.
The historian Herodotus writing in 446 BC recalls that Egyptian priests told him that over the course of 11,000 years there had been exceptional changes in the
Earth's rotation. “They did say...that four times within this period the sun changed his usual position, twice rising where he normally sets, and twice setting where he normally rises!”
Lord Of the Two Easts.
In his book World’s in Collision Immanuel Velikovsky makes copious reference to religious texts that all speak of a reversed celestial sphere. According to the
Talmud: “Seven days before the deluge, the Holy One changed the primeval order and the sun rose in the west and set in the east.” In the Koran there is the Lord “of the two easts and two wests!”
Hopi Legend
The horror of pole displacement is deeply etched into ancient mythology. A well known legend of the Hopi Indians talks of the axial poles as two twins that hold
the Earth in place. At the end of each age these twins are instructed to leave their position and let the world plunge into chaos. After this a new world was born, and the whole cycle
repeated itself.
Plato.
Plato in his dialogue The Statesman adds further to the mystery. “At periods the universe has its present circular motion, and at other periods it revolves in
the reverse direction.....Of all the changes which take place in the heavens this reversal is the greatest and most complete.” Plato warns this period of reversal is far from orderly: “There is at that time great destruction of animals in general, and only a small part of the human race survives.”
