Planet may be dangerously unbalanced.

Unbalanced world. The bewildering thing is that this supposedly very stable world of ours is decidedly unbalanced. One side of it is much heavier than the other. But is it enough to topple the world on its axis, and if so what would be the consequences?

Uneven landmass.

Even a cursory glance at the globe of the Earth will show the continents are far from evenly distributed. On one side of the globe we have the massive land-mass of Africa and Europe, and almost immediately opposite this there is the wide open expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

Two Different Sides.

In fact the world's greatest north- south expanse of land-mass, from the tip of Norway to the tip of South Africa, (below) is directly opposite the worlds greatest north- south expanse of unbroken ocean.

Here there is almost a clear line from pole to pole. It extends through the Bering Strait and Pacific Ocean right the way to the South Pole. A whole meridian that crosses no surface land-mass of any sort.

Uneven Distribution.

From this picture it is obvious that the distribution of the continents is very uneven. The alarming fact is that the planet is grossly unbalanced. Continental landmasses weigh far more than water. This means that the side of the globe that runs vertically through Africa and parts of Europe weighs substantially more than the Pacific side.

Tilted Earth.

If the Earth were not inclined on its axis this would make little difference. However tilted as it is at around 23.5 degrees, there are parts of the day when we are revolving up the slope, and parts of the day when we are spinning down the slope. (right)

Achilles Tendon.

If ever the Earth possessed an Achilles tendon then surely this is it - the seeds of a catastrophe just waiting to happen. It means that during certain times of the day the weight of the continents running down the slope of the Earth’s axial tilt is like a juggernaut lorry straining to take a bend in the road.

Unsupportable Burden.

Ordinarily the Earth is able to cope with these forces, but on some occasions the burden of additional factors proves just too much, and the whole planet literally topples on its axis.
